A Palestinian-American activist working on an oscar-winning film was killed by an Israeli settler in the occupied West Bank, igniting renewed calls for the United States to hold Israel accountable for violence against its citizens.
The killing of Basem Ayyad, a dual US-Palestinian citizen, has amplified concerns over the escalating violence in the West Bank and the perceived inaction of the US goverment in protecting its citizens abroad.Ayyad, known for his work on the documentary “20 Days in Mariupol,” which won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, was reportedly shot and killed by an Israeli settler near the village of Deir Jarir.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from human rights advocates and Palestinian-American officials, who point to a disturbing pattern of violence against palestinians and a lack of accountability for perpetrators.
Escalating Violence and US Response
“This is not an isolated incident,” stated Representative Rashida Tlaib, a Palestinian-American congresswoman, in response to the news. Tlaib highlighted the broader context of settler violence in the West Bank, where attacks on Palestinian communities and individuals have become increasingly frequent.
“Another American was killed in the West Bank just weeks ago,” she added, referring to the recent killing of another American citizen, Wisam Musallet. “How many more before the US takes action to protect its citizens abroad? Settlers burn homes, soldiers back them up, and our government sends billions to fund all of this.”
The US department of State has not yet responded to requests for comment on Ayyad’s killing.
No Arrests in Musallet’s Case, Pattern of impunity
The family of Wisam Musallet had previously urged a US inquiry into his killing, but Washington has largely deferred to Israeli authorities to investigate incidents involving Israeli military forces and settlers.
US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, had called for an aggressive investigation into musallet’s murder, stating, ”There must be accountability for this criminal and terrorist act.” Though, more than three weeks after the incident, no arrests have been made.
Since 2022, at least 10 US citizens have been killed by Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West bank, with none of these cases resulting in criminal charges. This pattern of impunity has fueled frustration among those advocating for greater US oversight and intervention.
Broader Concerns for Palestinian-American Rights
Ayyad’s death comes as Israeli forces continue to detain US teenager Mohammed Ibrahim without trial or access to his family. The 16-year-old has been held since february, and his family reports he is experiencing meaningful weight loss and a skin infection.Illinois State Representative Abdelnasser Rashid condemned Ayyad’s death as part of an “ugly pattern of settler colonial violence” in Palestine. He also called for the repeal of an Illinois state law that penalizes companies for boycotting Israeli firms, arguing that such legislation shields Israel from consequences for its actions.
“We need action,” Rashid told reporters. “Here in Illinois,we have a law that punishes companies that choose to do the right thing by boycotting Israel. This shameful state law helps shield Israel’s violence and brutality from consequences.”
The ongoing violence and the lack of accountability raise serious questions about the effectiveness of US policy in protecting its citizens and promoting human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories.
