US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin Emphasizes Strong Alliance with South Korea on 70th Anniversary of Korean War Armistice

During the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reaffirmed the enduring bond between the United States and South Korea, highlighting the motto of the ROK-US alliance, “We go together.” Austin emphasized that the alliance will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder, undeterred, in the face of future challenges.

In a statement, Secretary Austin remarked, “After 70 years since the signing of the Armistice Agreement and the ROK-US Mutual Defense Treaty, the iron-clad ROK-US alliance remains stronger than ever.” He urged all Americans to remember the tremendous cost of the Korean War and the bravery exhibited by those who fought against aggression amidst harsh conditions, resulting in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives.

Secretary Austin further expressed concern for the approximately 7,000 American soldiers whose whereabouts remain unknown, highlighting the ongoing importance of uncovering their fates and honoring their sacrifice.

Referencing former President Dwight Eisenhower’s belief that the truce would bring free people closer to a peaceful world, Austin attested, “It truly has come to pass.” He personally witnessed the remarkable achievements of South Korea during his visit, including a flourishing democracy, a vibrant economy, and a culture of innovation. These accomplishments serve as a testament to the shared sacrifices between the two nations.

Prior to Secretary Austin’s remarks, President Joe Biden, in line with his commitment to the alliance, acknowledged the vital role played by Korean War veterans in fostering global peace and prosperity.
