A widespread and dangerous heat wave is poised to blanket the Midwest and Northeast, placing over 100 million people under alert for possibly life-threatening temperatures. The excessive heat is expected to persist from Sunday through Wednesday in many areas.
The initial impact of the heat wave is hitting Midwestern states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and South Dakota. Residents can expect the heat index-the perceived temperature factoring in humidity-to soar as high as 110 degrees as early as Friday and Saturday.
The heat wave is forecast to extend into major cities further east. Heat indices may reach 107 in cities including Detroit, Cleveland, Ohio, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia between Sunday and Wednesday.
Health officials urge taking heat wave warnings seriously. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that over 700 people die from heat-related illnesses annually. The Fifth National Climate Assessment identifies extreme heat as the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States.
