Iran Nuclear Deal Faces Uncertainty Amid U.S., Iranian Stance
Updated June 5, 2025
Negotiations surrounding Iran’s nuclear program are in flux as the U.S. and Iran publicly disagree on the conditions of a proposed interim agreement. The Trump administration put forth the agreement as a potential bridge to a more comprehensive, long-term resolution.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, iran’s supreme leader, rejected the proposal Wednesday, stating it “contradicts our principle of power.” He vowed Iran would not halt uranium enrichment on its territory, calling it essential to their nuclear program. Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi reinforced this stance, tweeting, “no enrichment, no deal.”
President Donald Trump asserted a contrasting position on Monday, stating on Truth Social, “Under our potential Agreement — WE WILL NOT ALLOW ANY ENRICHMENT OF URANIUM!”
While U.S. officials have indicated the interim proposal allows low-level uranium enrichment to sustain Iran’s civilian nuclear energy program, Trump’s statement casts doubt on the U.S.’s commitment to its own offer. It remains uncertain if a sixth round of negotiations will occur, though a meeting is under consideration, according to a U.S. official.
Following a conversation with Russian president Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, Trump suggested Moscow could play a larger role in the Iran nuclear negotiations. “President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion,” Trump posted. He added,”It is indeed my opinion that Iran has been slowwalking their decision on this very critically important matter, and we will need a definitive answer in a very short period of time!”
an anonymous Iranian official described the U.S. terms as “unreasonable, greedy and unconventional,” citing a growing mistrust due to shifting U.S. positions. The official added that the proposal is not even open for review.
Iran seeks sanctions relief to revitalize its struggling economy. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated Tehran requires guarantees regarding the “real end of the sanctions,” including details on the lifting mechanisms.
What’s next
The path forward remains unclear, contingent on whether the U.S. and Iran can reconcile their conflicting stances on uranium enrichment and sanctions relief. Russia’s potential involvement could introduce a new dynamic to the negotiations.
