The United States men’s national soccer team enters a new cycle ahead of an exhibition against Peru, bringing together a roster evenly mixed with uncapped prospects and members of the 2026 World Cup squad.
A Generational Gap Rooted in 2018
When the United States failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the program fell into what FOX Sports contributor Brian Sciaretta termed a black hole of development among players born between 1990 and 1996. That failure abruptly ended the international careers of veterans such as 38-year-old Tim Howard, 35-year-old DaMarcus Beasley, and 34-year-old Clint Dempsey.
In the aftermath, teenagers like Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, and Weston McKennie were thrust into prominent roles prematurely. When an 18-year-old Adams and a 19-year-old McKennie debuted in an October 2017 friendly against Portugal, Alejandro Bedoya and DeAndre Yedlin were the only players on the roster with prior World Cup experience.
When I came into the national team, there was a really big gap,
Adams said during a videoconference with reporters on September 23, 2026. It was all us young guys, 17 and 18, and then it was like 33, 34, and guys that were obviously phasing out of the national team.

By the time defender Chris Richards debuted in 2020 at age 20, veterans Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley had also played their final international matches. Richards recalled leaning primarily on center backs Tim Ream and John Brooks—neither of whom had played in a World Cup at that point—alongside his former youth national team peers.
A New Balance for the 2030 Cycle
The current setup contrasts sharply with the conditions Adams and Richards faced as debutants. Adams, now 27, has accumulated more than 250 club appearances across the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Bundesliga, and MLS, alongside two World Cup appearances.
While AC Milan’s Pulisic and Juventus’ McKennie are sidelined for upcoming home friendlies against Chile, Mexico, and Canada due to early-season injuries in Italy, the overall squad carries significantly more experience. Seven players on the current roster have played in both a regional qualifying campaign and a World Cup tournament, compared to just Yedlin when Qatar 2022 qualifying began.
Make sure that they know that they still have to earn a spot,
Richards said regarding the integration of younger prospects. Just because you’re here, it’s not the finish line. It’s the starting point.

Richards also noted his role in team culture, having led the initiation ritual on September 23, 2026, where first-time call-ups sing in the meal room to feel welcome in the environment.
Upcoming Schedule and Pressure Relief
The senior team moves quickly from friendlies into competitive fixtures, with the 2026–27 Concacaf Nations League schedule starting in November 2026. A Gold Cup follows in the summer of 2027, followed by potential tournaments in the summer of 2028 including the Olympic Games for age-eligible under-23 players and a potential Copa América.
Because the United States qualified automatically for the 2026 World Cup as co-hosts, the current crop of teenagers avoids the intense pressure that defined the post-2018 rebuilding phase.
There’s less pressure on these young kids to come in and perform immediately, and more time to be able to actually develop them,
Adams said. I look at this generation of players right now, and I think they’re in a great position to be able to go through the process properly.
