The National Park Service is facing significant operational and structural reductions following budget cuts and staffing losses implemented since President Donald Trump took office in 2025.

According to journalist Stephanie Pearson, who has written for Outside Magazine for decades and authored two books on the parks, nearly a quarter of full-time National Park staff have lost their positions. This represents a loss of more than 4,000 jobs across the system.

Pearson noted that while public-facing roles at visitor kiosks often remain filled to maintain a facade of normalcy for tourists, the cuts have primarily impacted critical behind-the-scenes roles. These include biologists and scientists studying wildlife and flora, as well as infrastructure personnel responsible for park maintenance.

To fill these gaps, the administration has increased the use of seasonal employees. These roles are now frequently defined as nine-month positions, which may provide health insurance but lack the full benefits associated with permanent full-time employment.

The financial pressure on the system is expected to increase. The administration’s proposed 2027 budget would cut more than a fourth of the remaining annual budget for the national parks.

Operational Impacts and Visitor Experience

The reduction in staffing and funding has led to tangible changes in how iconic parks are managed. In several high-traffic locations, including Yosemite, Glacier and Acadia National Parks, previous reservation systems for vehicle access have been lifted.

This shift toward a “free-for-all” access model has resulted in significant congestion. Pearson cited an example from the first weekend of May, where visitors at Yosemite National Park faced wait times of an hour and a half to enter the park.

These operational struggles coincide with a promotional push from the administration. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has encouraged Americans to travel through his YouTube show, The Great American Road Trip. President Trump has placed his image on the annual national parks pass as part of an effort to encourage citizens to visit the parks during the country’s 250th birthday celebrations.

Ideological and Cultural Shifts

Beyond budgetary constraints, the administration is implementing a programmatic overhaul of the parks’ educational and historical content. In March 2025, President Trump issued an executive order titled Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that the order aims to eliminate depictions within the Park Service that inappropriately disparage Americans past or living, including in colonial times.

The implementation of this order has led to several specific removals across the country:

  • Climate change signage has been removed at Acadia National Park.
  • A review of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail resulted in the removal of approximately 80 items.
  • The pride flag was removed from Stonewall in New York City, although it was later reinstated by city officials.

controversy has emerged in Big Bend National Park, where efforts to construct a border wall through the park have met with bipartisan opposition from the public.

Pearson expressed concern over the long-term preservation of these landscapes, though she noted that the public reaction in places like Big Bend suggests a continuing value placed on the conservation legacy established by figures such as Theodore Roosevelt.
