A statement issued by the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet announced two separate incidents involving aircraft from the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier in the South China Sea. The first incident involved a Sea Hawk helicopter that crashed “while conducting routine operations.”
The Navy stated that search and rescue teams successfully recovered all three crew members who were aboard the helicopter.
Just half an hour later, a Super Hornet fighter jet crashed into the South China sea while also “conducting routine operations” from the USS Nimitz, according to the Navy.
Both pilots aboard the fighter jet safely ejected and were recovered.
The U.S. Navy indicated that the cause of both accidents is currently under inquiry.
These incidents occur during President Donald Trump’s first visit to Asia during his second term, and as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth prepares for an Asian tour encompassing multiple countries.
Earlier this year, two U.S. warplanes crashed from the USS Harry S. truman aircraft carrier while on a mission in the Middle East.
