As of Tuesday, August 19th, francesca Jones, ranked 86th in the world, led the charge with a strong opening victory, while several other British hopefuls faced elimination.
Jones, the top seed in qualifying – a position earned after narrowly missing direct entry to the main draw - defeated Slovakia’s Viktoria Hruncakova in straight sets,6-3,6-4. Her powerful serve was a key factor, delivering six aces in a match lasting one hour and 22 minutes, and boasting an impressive 87% win rate on her first serves. Jones will face Ekaterine Gorgodze of Georgia on Wednesday, aiming to reach the US Open main draw for the first time in her career.
Challenges and Setbacks for Other Brits
The day wasn’t without its setbacks for the British contingent. Former British number one Heather Watson suffered a three-set defeat (6-3, 3-6, 4-6) to Gorgodze, marking her fourth consecutive year failing to qualify for the main draw.
