United States President Donald Trump announced on May 24, 2026, that an agreement with Iran has been largely negotiated, stating that specific details of the deal will be released soon. One of the primary components of the proposed agreement is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

The announcement follows a period of diplomatic activity involving several regional powers. President Trump indicated via social media that he had conducted a very good call with the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. These discussions centered on a Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE.

According to the U.S. President, the agreement is currently subject to finalization between the United States, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and other listed countries. While final aspects and details remain under discussion, Trump asserted that any final agreement would absolutely prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

The diplomatic push toward a long-term peace deal has been ongoing since a ceasefire was established in early April 2026. As part of the current negotiations, U.S. Media reports suggest the deal could involve a 60-day extension of the ceasefire, during which the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened.

The Iranian government has provided a more cautious assessment of the progress. A spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry told state television that while the positions of the United States and Iran have been converging over the past week, this convergence does not guarantee that agreements will be reached on all key issues. The spokesman also accused the United States of making contradictory statements.

Pakistan has acted as an intermediary in the negotiations to facilitate a peace deal. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a statement on X congratulating President Trump on his extraordinary efforts to pursue peace following a phone call that Sharif described as very useful and productive. Sharif expressed hope that Pakistan would host the next round of talks in the near future.

In addition to the outreach to Gulf nations and intermediaries, President Trump confirmed he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on May 23, 2026. Trump stated that the conversation went very well, though he did not provide further details regarding the content of the call with the Israeli leader.
