US Sends Reinforcements to Ukraine as Russia Threatens Rail Attacks

US weapons reinforcements arrive in Ukraine, warning Russia to target rail attacks

(AFP, Kyiv, 26th) As Ukraine awaits the arrival of new weapons from the United States, Ukraine warned today that Russia will intensify its attacks on railways in an attempt to cut off military supplies before a new wave of insurgents.

Ukraine is concerned that Russia is trying to gain a battlefield advantage ahead of the symbolic World War II Victory Day on May 9. Both sides continue to launch deadly cross-border airstrikes, and front-line personnel on both sides said that at least five people killed today.

Ukrainian security sources told AFP that Russia plans to sabotage Ukraine’s railway infrastructure to “paralyze transport and the flow of military goods” as it prepares to advance.

The source added: “These are standard steps before an attack.”

The Russian military has firepower and troop superiority on the front line. Kiev authorities have warned that fighting will become more difficult in the coming weeks.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin today announced an additional $6 billion in military aid to Ukraine, the largest single aid in history, and will include the National Advanced Air Defense System (NASAMS) and Patriot interceptor missiles.

This is the second US aid plan for Ukraine this week after President Biden signed a bill authorizing a total of US$61 billion in new aid to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he believed Russia intended to allow Russian troops to capture the strategic town of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine before May 9. He said today that the United States had delayed reinforcements for several months, causing military Ukraine suffered losses on the battlefield.
