More than one-quarter of Americans now hold positive views of China, according to a Pew Research Center survey released on April 15, 2026. This shift in sentiment comes as U.S. President Donald Trump prepares for a scheduled summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing in May.

The survey, conducted in March 2026, found that approximately 27 per cent of Americans maintain a favourable view of China. This represents a 6 percentage point increase since 2025 and is nearly double the proportion recorded during a record low in 2023. The 2023 decline in sentiment was attributed to a combination of the Covid-19 pandemic, a trade war and an alleged Chinese spy balloon incident.

Shifting Perceptions of U.S.-China Relations

The data indicates a transition in how the American public characterizes Beijing. Fewer respondents now describe China as an enemy, while a larger proportion of Americans identify the country as a competitor. About one in 10 respondents in the poll described China as a partner of the United States.

Political affiliations showed varying trends in sentiment. The proportion of Democrats who view China favourably increased by 8 percentage points compared to 2025. In contrast, opinions among Republicans remained largely unchanged during the same period.

The survey also measured public confidence in the leadership of both nations. Confidence in President Xi Jinping to do the right thing improved by 4 percentage points. Conversely, confidence in President Trump to make effective policy decisions regarding China decreased by 6 percentage points compared to 2025 data.

Diplomatic Context and the Beijing Summit

The warming trend in public sentiment follows a period of relative stabilization in diplomatic ties. U.S.-China relations steadied after a meeting between President Trump and President Xi in South Korea in 2025, which served to dial back an escalating trade war.

The two leaders are now scheduled to meet in Beijing in May, with the possibility of a second meeting later in 2026. This upcoming summit follows a temporary truce in the trade war that has been in place since October.

The May meeting was originally scheduled to take place from March 31 to April 2. However, the White House announced that China agreed to postpone the visit by five or six weeks. This delay was influenced by the ongoing war in the Middle East, specifically the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.

Geopolitical Pressures and Domestic Influence

The conflict involving Iran, a country that maintains friendly relations with China, is expected to be a primary agenda item during the May summit. Beijing has been monitoring the effects of the Iran war on U.S. Geopolitics and the potential impact on the U.S. Midterm elections scheduled for November.

The postponed summit is expected to focus on the next phase of the U.S.-China trade war and the complications arising from the conflict in the Middle East. Here’s the first time President Trump and President Xi will meet in person since October.

China’s top envoy has described 2026 as a landmark year for ties between the two nations, despite the widening conflict in Iran.
