US Visa Warning: Indian Woman Arrested for Theft – Risks & Consequences
US Warns Visitors: shoplifting Can Lead to Visa Revocation and Future Bans
The United States has issued a stern warning to foreign visitors, emphasizing that committing crimes like assault, theft, or burglary can have severe consequences beyond legal penalties, including visa revocation and ineligibility for future US visas. The advisory underscores the nation’s commitment to law and order, expecting all foreign visitors to adhere to US laws.
Indian Woman’s Alleged Shoplifting Sparks Debate
This warning comes in the wake of a widely publicized incident where an Indian woman was apprehended for allegedly attempting to shoplift goods worth over $1,300 (approximately ₹1.11 lakh) from a Target store in Illinois, USA. The incident, captured on bodycam footage that subsequently went viral, shows the woman, reportedly a visitor from India, being confronted and detained by US police. In the footage, she is heard pleading with officers, questioning the harm in paying for the items.
“But if I’m paying for it, what is the harm?” she is heard asking an officer. The officer responded, ”It would have been fine if you didn’t leave, right? You would have had that opportunity to pay. But because you left the store at that point, you chose not to pay for it, and we can’t go back.”
The incident has ignited a notable online debate regarding the consequences of such actions for foreign nationals.
US Visa Rules Tighten: Social Media Transparency now Mandatory
The recent advisory also highlights a series of evolving regulations impacting US visa applications. In a significant move, the US State Department has mandated that applicants for F, M, or J non-immigrant visas must set their social media accounts to ’public’. This measure is intended to facilitate identity verification and security vetting processes.
Last month, the US Embassy in India announced that all individuals applying for thes specific non-immigrant visas are required to adjust the privacy settings on all their social media accounts to ‘public’.This policy aims to enhance the thoroughness of security checks for visa applicants.
Furthermore, on July 12, the US Embassy in India issued a strong statement threatening to revoke visas and deport individuals who fail to comply with US laws and immigration rules. This reinforces the US government’s stance on maintaining strict adherence to its legal framework for all visitors.
