US Dominates Europe in ETF Industry AUM, Growth factors
Updated May 31, 2025
the U.S. exchange-traded fund (ETF) market substantially outpaces its European counterpart in assets under management (AUM). As of April 30, 2025, U.S.ETF promoters held $10.48 trillion in AUM,while european promoters held $2.34 trillion.
Several factors contribute to this disparity. One key reason is the difference in how ETFs are defined and regulated. The U.S. market includes various legal structures, some resembling structured notes more then traditional ETFs, boosting AUM figures. In contrast, European ETFs adhere to stricter mutual fund regulations, impacting eligible assets and diversification.
Tax treatment also plays a crucial role. The U.S. ETF industry experienced substantial growth as investors shifted from actively managed mutual funds to etfs, driven by tax advantages. However, European ETFs lack such tax benefits compared to mutual funds; in some regions, they face tax disadvantages.
While the number of listed ETF products is similar in the U.S. (4,152) and Europe (4,168), the U.S. offers a broader range of investment strategies. After excluding additional share classes, U.S. investors can choose from 4,083 different ETFs, while european investors have 2,095 options.
The average AUM per ETF in the U.S.is $2.57 billion, more than double the $1.11 billion in europe. However, Europe provides a wider array of investment classifications, with 177 Lipper Global Classifications compared to 139 in the U.S.
