U.S. Reaffirms Non-Recognition of Maduro, Backs 2015 National Assembly

The United States government has once again declared Nicolás Maduro’s presidency illegitimate, continuing to recognize the National Assembly (AN) elected in 2015 as the legitimate representative government of Venezuela. This position was reiterated in a statement submitted as part of legal proceedings concerning PDVSA 2020 bonds.
U.S. officials maintain that Maduro does not represent the will of the Venezuelan people.
U.S. Continues Support for the 2015 National Assembly
The U.S. government asserts that the Parliament elected in 2015 remains the only democratically elected institution within venezuela. This stance underscores a consistent policy of supporting democratic processes in the country.
The statement was signed by Michael G. Kozak, a senior official at the U.S. State Department. Kozak emphasized that the U.S. has not recognized Maduro or his administration as legitimate since January 2019.
“Maduro and his corrupt inner circle have devastated the economy, violated human rights, and misappropriated the assets of the Venezuelan people,” Kozak stated, according to the official communication.
The U.S. government also indicated that resolutions and statements issued by the 2015 National Assembly should be accorded the same weight and consideration as those of any foreign government.
