LOS ANGELES – The Montana State men’s basketball team (5-6) dropped the first game of a challenging five-game road trip Sunday night, falling to USC (7-4) 89-63 at the Galen Center.
The bobcats struggled to find their rhythm offensively, shooting just 32.8% from the field (20 of 61). USC, on the other hand, came out firing, establishing an early 18-2 lead and forcing Montana State into costly turnovers.
“First you have to credit USC,” said head coach Matt Logie. “They came out with tremendous energy and pressured us well at the beginning of the game. We missed a couple shots at the rim and then just couldn’t really get our footing. We certainly can play much better than we played tonight, and USC was a big part of that.”
The Trojans’ relentless pressure defense proved too much for the Bobcats to overcome, as they missed 24 of their first 30 shots. USC extended their lead to 27-5 just ten minutes into the first half, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
Despite the tough loss, there where some luminous spots for Montana State.Brandon Walker led the Bobcats with 14 points and four rebounds, while Jeremiah Davis had a career-high 11 points off the bench in his return to Southern California. Jed Miller, a native of nearby Agoura Hills, chipped in seven points.
The Bobcats will look to bounce back from this setback as they continue their road trip.
Trojans Dominate Bobcats on the Boards in Decisive Victory
Los Angeles, CA - The USC Trojans cruised to a commanding victory over the Montana State Bobcats on Saturday night, showcasing their dominance on the glass and stifling defense. USC out-rebounded Montana State 49-22, setting the tone for a lopsided 89-63 win.
The Trojans’ relentless rebounding effort was evident from the opening tip. They controlled the paint, limiting Montana State to a season-low 21 points in the first half and building a commanding 47-21 lead at the break.”Our goal in the second half was to win the second half and we came out of that tied,” said Montana State head coach Danny Sprinkle. “We just didn’t execute well enough, didn’t do our jobs well enough, and we weren’t prepared for their pressure well enough. There’s a lot of areas for all of us to grow.”
Despite a more competitive second half, where the Bobcats matched USC 42-42, the early deficit proved insurmountable. Montana State struggled to find consistent offensive rhythm against USC’s suffocating defense, cycling through 12 players in an attempt to find answers.
“The biggest thing we were trying to do in the second half was just play like Montana State,” Sprinkle explained. “Move the ball,do our jobs defensively, and be disciplined on the scout-specific things. That’s what got us in the hole in the first place. I thought our response was solid but obviously we came here to compete and win. When you go on the road to compete against tough teams, you have to start well, and those first four to eight minutes we just couldn’t get our engine going.”
Desmond Claude led the Trojans with 19 points, while Saint thomas, a former standout at Northern Colorado, added 17 points and seven rebounds.
Looking ahead, Sprinkle emphasized the need for his team to learn from this experience and prepare for their next challenge.
“We’ve got to learn quickly the lessons from this and get prepared for UC Riverside,” he said.UP NEXT
