  • Why it Matters: Reflects economic pressures, changing consumer behavior, and has socio-economic implications.
  • What’s Next: Potential policy implications regarding vehicle age, emissions standards, and support for the informal sector.

The Rise of the Second-Hand Market

Morocco is experiencing a notable boom in its used car market. A recent study, based on an analysis of 101,896 used vehicle sales advertisements collected in 2024,provides a detailed picture of this trend. The research team meticulously cleaned and structured the data, standardizing key vehicle characteristics – brand, model, price, mileage, fuel type, tax power, transmission, and condition – to create a publicly accessible and reliable database.

The primary driver behind this growth is the increasing cost of new vehicles. Rising customs duties, Value Added tax (VAT), and escalating production costs have made new cars less accessible to a significant portion of the population. Consequently, more households are turning to the used car market as a viable alternative.

Dominant Brands and Vehicle Age

The study identifies a concentration of sales around a dozen leading brands. Dacia has emerged as the most popular choice, capitalizing on its reputation for affordability. It is followed by Volkswagen, peugeot, Renault, and Hyundai – all manufacturers known for offering value for money.

Though, the data also reveals that the average age of vehicles being sold is between 7 and 12 years. While this allows more people to afford car ownership,it also presents challenges. Older vehicles typically have higher emissions and lower fuel efficiency, perhaps hindering Morocco’s energy transition goals. Furthermore, an aging vehicle fleet raises concerns about road safety.

brand Market Share (Approximate)
Dacia 25%
Volkswagen 18%
Peugeot 15%
Renault 12%
hyundai 8%
Other 22%
Approximate market share of leading brands in Morocco’s used car market (2024).

Socio-Economic Impact

The used car market plays a crucial social role in Morocco. In a context of declining purchasing power, a used car often represents the only feasible transportation option for middle-class families and young workers. It facilitates professional mobility and improves access to opportunities, particularly in regions with limited public transportation.

Beyond individual benefits, the sector supports a significant informal economy. Independent sellers, small garages, brokers, and vehicle renovation workshops all contribute to a network that generates thousands of direct and indirect jobs. This demonstrates that the used car market extends beyond simple transactions, functioning as a vital socio-economic pillar.
