Rose Lavelle and Croix Bethune will join the united States women’s national team (USWNT) for the first time this year, as the team prepares for matches against Ireland and Canada. The midfield duo are part of the 25-player roster announced Wednesday by USWNT head coach Emma Hayes.
Both Lavelle and Bethune are Olympic gold medal winners. Hayes’ latest roster reflects her ongoing commitment to expanding the national team’s player pool, with four players receiving their first call-ups.
“We want to continue to improve our understanding of how we want to play and widen the player pool, and those are some of the key goals of this three-game window,” Hayes said.
Hayes added that the roster includes players with varying levels of experience, and her priority is to deepen their exposure to international soccer. She acknowledged the upcoming matches against Ireland and Canada will be challenging. The goal is to win while preparing for future competitions.
The USWNT will face Ireland on June 26 near Denver, followed by a second match three days later in Cincinnati, which is Lavelle’s hometown. the series concludes against Canada on July 2 in Washington,D.C.
Naomi Girma is the only player on the roster who does not currently play in the NWSL. Hayes said last week that she is allowing her European-based players to rest during this international window.
