A volunteer firefighter in Uintah County is recovering at home after being engulfed in flames during an early-season wildfire in March. Kyle Allred, the training officer for the Lapoint-Tridell Fire Department, survived the incident which he describes as a miracle.

The incident occurred on March 17, 2026, just outside Roosevelt in Fort Duchesne. Allred was among the crews battling the East Ute Plaza Fire, a blaze believed to have been human-caused. While firefighters were using controlled burns to prevent the fire from spreading toward nearby homes, an unexpected shift in wind conditions created a dangerous environment.

Allred attempted to escape the advancing flames by running uphill, but he slipped and fell before reaching safety. The fall left him vulnerable as fire caught his lower body.

“I started running as quick as I could and got almost to the top. And then I slipped and fell. From my belt down to the middle of my thigh was on fire. It was terrifying.” Kyle Allred, Lapoint-Tridell Fire Department

Allred said that as he lay on the ground unable to get up, he experienced a brief moment of fearing he would die. He credits divine intervention for giving him the strength to push off the ground and reach a guard rail.

“The thought that God put in my mind was, ‘Get home to your wife and kids,’” Kyle Allred, Lapoint-Tridell Fire Department

Medical Recovery and Treatment

Allred sustained second- and third-degree burns over more than 7% of his body. He was transported to the University of Utah Health Burn Center, where he remained for 23 days. During his hospitalization, he underwent two skin graft surgeries to treat the injuries.

Lapoint-Tridell Fire Chief Tyler McKee confirmed that Allred has since been released from the burn center and is continuing his recovery at home with the assistance of home health care.

Chief McKee noted that the injury had a significant impact on the department, as this was the first time they had experienced an injury of this severity.

“Some people (it) affected mentally just a little bit; and definitely it’s affected all of us. Sometimes, when things happen like this. We reevaluate and reassure that our safety practices are put into place all the time.” Tyler McKee, Lapoint-Tridell Fire Chief

Wildfire Conditions in Utah

The East Ute Plaza Fire broke out near the intersection of U.S. 40 and 7500 East. Officials stated that a lack of moisture during the winter months created conditions conducive to an active and dangerous wildfire season. In the week following the East Ute Plaza incident, the Lapoint-Tridell Fire Department responded to at least three additional fires in the same area, including one that burned approximately ¾ of an acre.

Chief McKee described the fire conditions seen this year as especially dangerous, citing wind patterns that change more frequently than the department is accustomed to.

Community members and fellow first responders are organizing a fundraiser to assist Allred with his medical expenses. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026, in Tridell.
