The sound of breaking carbon bikes was really horrible.”

The collision occurred approximately eight kilometers into‍ the race, within the first two starting groups. Groeneweg, a regular participant in Gran Fondo events, noted the unusually large size of the initial group, comprising 500 cyclists.”Normally, those groups are smaller,” he said. “Such a ⁣large starting ⁣group is asking for problems.”

This marked the inaugural Gran Fondo event held⁤ in Belgium. The top 25 finishers in⁢ each age category were slated to qualify for the Gran Fondo World Cup.
