Value-Based Care Poised for Growth in 2025: Survey Highlights
Updated May 30, 2025
Value-based care (VBC) is reshaping healthcare, and 2025 could be a pivotal year for its widespread adoption. For ambulatory care practices, understanding this evolving landscape is crucial for delivering quality care and ensuring the sustainability of various care models.
according to a recent athenahealth survey of approximately 1,000 U.S. physicians, nearly half (49.2%) are utilizing at least one VBC payment model, even as fee-for-service (FFS) remains prevalent. The survey suggests that VBC adoption may become essential in the future, especially for ambulatory care practices that possess the agility to invest in these programs.
The survey also found that 15.1% of physicians see VBC as a key factor in managing U.S.healthcare costs, second only to price clarity. Notably, interest in price transparency was consistent across both VBC and FFS physicians, indicating a broad desire to align cost and quality.
Physicians using VBC models were also 2.3 times more likely to believe that enhanced connectivity between details systems could significantly impact healthcare cost management. Almost a quarter (23.1%) of VBC physicians expressed this view, compared to 11.5% of FFS physicians. this aligns with research showing that interoperability streamlines workflows and reduces data silos, which are essential for VBC success.
For physicians using VBC, electronic health records (EHRs) are seen as vital for patient care management and reducing administrative burden. VBC physicians were nearly twice as likely to agree that their EHR reduces time spent on administrative tasks.
VBC physicians also show greater interest in adopting artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies. they were 2.1 times as likely to agree that AI is beneficial in reducing their workload, a trend supported by findings from the American Medical Association (AMA) suggesting that AI can enhance efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and patient outcomes within VBC practices.
The survey, conducted by Harris Poll in January 2024, highlights the transformative potential of VBC in managing healthcare costs and alleviating administrative burdens. It suggests that physicians committed to VBC are more adaptable and eager to embrace new technologies.

What’s next
While the transition to VBC is underway, many practices remain hesitant due to financial risks and responsibilities. athenahealth plans to release its fourth annual Physician Sentiment survey soon, providing updated insights into these evolving attitudes.
