Risant ⁣Health Aims⁣ to Scale Value-Based⁣ Care Model Nationwide

⁢ updated June 23, 2025

At the ViVe 2025 Conference, ⁢industry experts discussed Risant Health’s efforts to reshape value-based care by extending Kaiser Permanente’s integrated model to a wider array of health systems. Scaling value-based care while respecting local autonomy and adapting to different⁤ payment structures presents meaningful challenges.

David Grandy, chief product officer at Risant Health, noted that ‍Kaiser Permanente members tend to ⁤be healthier wiht lower disease burdens. Risant Health, established by Kaiser ⁢Permanente in 2023,⁣ seeks to broaden access to this integrated care model by acquiring and partnering with high-performing, nonprofit health systems already focused on value-based care. Geisinger was the first system ⁣to join, followed by Cone Health. Risant aims to adapt Kaiser Permanente’s best practices to diverse health systems nationwide, rather than simply replicating the model.

Grandy emphasized the need to tailor solutions for a multi-payer environment and various physician relationships, including employed doctors, clinically integrated networks, and autonomous practitioners. Risant’s Value-Based Platform (VBP) is ‍central to this strategy, integrating technology and services while preserving the identities of partner health systems. According to grandy, the VBP enables Risant to layer technology and services onto existing organizations, accelerating their transition to value-based care.

Dr. Ben Hohmuth, chief medical informatics officer at geisinger, acknowledged initial concerns about the acquisition but noted a smooth transition. He stated that Geisinger employees realized their identity remained intact while benefiting from Risant’s resources. A ⁣key milestone was the launch of three new technology products in 2024, including an ambient clinical assistant, a value-based care guide, and Intelligent Triage.

Hohmuth reported‍ significant early impact at Geisinger. ⁤The ambient clinical assistant has saved providers about 35 ‍minutes per day, while primary care physicians have experienced a 70% reduction ⁢in⁤ perceived work outside of work and a 55% decrease in ⁤self-reported⁤ burnout. The ‍value-based care guide, integrated into the EHR, offers a ‍structured approach to managing common conditions, aiming to improve ⁤access, decrease total cost of care, and expedite patient resolution.

Adapting to the fragmented U.S. healthcare payment system is a⁢ major challenge for Risant. Hohmuth explained that Geisinger operates in both fee-for-service and⁤ value-based care environments, necessitating a focus on reducing unnecessary costs and improving patient access. By reducing waste, such as unnecessary hospital admissions or redundant tests, Risant aims to drive down the total cost ⁤of care and create payer alignment.

Grandy added that demonstrating real-world outcomes is crucial for gaining⁤ payer buy-in. ⁤He⁢ believes that if Risant can ⁤prove it’s solutions ⁤improve quality, lower costs, and enhance the patient experience, meaningful⁣ conversations about risk-sharing can occur.

What’s next

Risant plans to acquire five or six more health systems in the coming years, seeking organizations already committed to value-based care. Grandy envisions Risant as both a direct operator of value-based health systems and an influencer in the broader industry, inspiring other health systems to adopt its solutions and drive change across nonprofit healthcare nationwide.
