Valve is implementing a structured reservation system for its new Steam Controller to combat reseller activity and botting after the device sold out shortly after its release on May 5, 2026.
The company opened a reservations queue on May 8, 2026, at 1 PM ET to provide an alternative for customers who were unable to purchase the $99 controller during the initial launch. This move follows reports of controllers appearing on eBay at prices significantly higher than the retail cost.

Steam Controller Reservation Requirements
To prevent the creation of dummy accounts by scalpers, Valve has established strict eligibility criteria for the reservation queue. Users must have an account in good standing and must have completed at least one purchase on the Steam platform before April 27, 2026.

The system operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Valve stated that once you reserve, your place in line will be saved
and that order emails will be distributed in the order reservations were received when stock returns.
Once a customer receives an order email, they have 72 hours to complete the transaction. Valve has limited purchases to one controller per customer and those who already purchased a device during the initial sale are ineligible for the reservation queue.
Leaked Hardware: Steam Machine and Steam Frame
While the focus has remained on the controller, data from SteamDB and code discovered by users on Reddit suggest that Valve is preparing to launch additional hardware, including a new Steam Machine and a Steam Frame VR headset.
The Steam Machine, described as a PC/console hybrid, may be available in four different configurations. Based on code scrapers, these versions likely involve two different storage options—a 512GB SSD and a 2TB SSD—with the additional variations depending on whether the device is bundled with a Steam Controller.
Similarly, the Steam Frame VR headset is expected to launch with two storage tiers: 256GB and 1TB. Both the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame are reported to support expanded storage through the use of microSD cards.
Strategic Shift in Hardware Distribution
The adoption of a reservation-based system marks a shift in how Valve handles high-demand hardware launches. This strategy is designed to mitigate the impact of automated bots that often exhaust inventory within seconds of a product going live.
Industry analysts and users expect Valve to apply these same strict procedures—including the 72-hour purchase window and account history requirements—to the upcoming Steam Machine and Steam Frame releases to ensure the hardware reaches actual consumers rather than resellers.
This hardware push comes a decade after Valve’s original attempt at the Steam Machine concept, signaling a renewed effort to integrate PC gaming into a dedicated console-like ecosystem.
While we were happy to see such a high level of interest, the experience for a lot of you trying to buy it was incredibly frustrating
