Potential Impact of Funding Reductions
A decrease in subsidies could lead to either a reduction in daycare services or a need to secure choice funding sources, according to Laurie WillMomett, president of the Fédération Romande des Associations de Jeunesse (FRAJE), a network of childhood day care organizations. This could translate to increased financial burdens for both municipalities and parents.
Vanessa Monnet, head of the childhood sector in the Vaudoise section of the Public Services Syndicat (SSP), echoed these concerns. She stated that a drop in subsidies would disproportionately affect a sector already struggling to meet demand. “A drop in subsidies in a sector that has so many needs will necessarily have repercussions on parents and municipalities. These already contribute enormously and among parents, some say they cannot make a second or third child so much the cost of a place in the crèche is high,” Monnet told RTS Matinal.
Concerns Over Government Commitments and Staffing
Laurie WillMomett expressed disappointment that the Vaud government appears to be backtracking on its previous support for the daycare system. She emphasized the existing challenges within the sector, including a shortage of available places and a lack of qualified staff.
“The day care of childhood is a public service which is already in difficulty: there is a lack of places, [mais] also a staff shortage. It is a profession that is exhausting and little valued,” WillMomett noted. “In this context, cutting in childhood, it is a very bad signal.”
The low valuation of the profession contributes to staffing shortages, creating a cycle of strain on existing resources and potentially impacting the quality of care.
Recent Expansion Efforts and Persistent Shortages
Despite the creation of 427 new crèche places in 2024, the canton of Vaud continues to face a important shortage of childcare options. RTS reports that demand still outstrips supply, leaving many families struggling to find affordable and accessible childcare.
Government Response and Upcoming Budget Presentation
The Council of State has declined to comment on the reported funding cuts, stating that the budget will be presented at the end of the month. unions are calling for mobilization against the proposed economy measures, with a demonstration planned for October 2 in Lausanne.
