Merchants from the Main Market of Maracay protested yesterday morning, after spending three days without electrical service, after a transformer, located in a sewer on Santos Michelena Avenue, failed.

For several hours, the owners of the stalls blocked vehicular passage through the aforementioned road, with banners that said “we want light.”

One of those affected, a chicken seller, highlighted that he had large losses, due to the lack of refrigeration of the merchandise. “Who will replace this that was lost?” questioned the merchant.

Another of the owners, who did not want to identify himself, commented that the majority work with perishable products such as fruits, vegetables, chicken, meat and fish, so they had to close the stores and look for ways to “save” some of the raw materials.

Lucia Tandioy, leader of the merchant community, indicated that despite the multiple problems they face due to infrastructure and “power outages,” they can make some money to take home. However, “after three days without service and in the face of indifference from the authorities, we had to go out to demonstrate.”

Work began

After the protest action, yesterday afternoon, a committee of workers from the Corpoelec company arrived at the scene and began work to review the breakdown reported by those affected.
