Venezuela Releases Political Prisoners, Announces Reconciliation Efforts
Venezuela’s interim government has begun releasing its first batch of political prisoners, stated as a move to create national reconciliation.
Mr. Jorge Rodriguez, President of the Venezuelan Parliament and brother of Acting President Delcy Rodríguez, revealed that relevant agencies have begun releasing a large number of prisoners, both Venezuelans and foreigners.
Rodriguez stated the objective is to live together peacefully,but did not disclose which prisoners were freed,how many there are,or where they were held.
A statement from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign affairs said Rocio San Miguel, a Spanish-venezuelan lawyer and activist, who has been imprisoned since Febuary 2024 on charges related to an assassination plot, was among those released.
President Nicholas Maduro released five Spaniards in this move. The release follows US President Donald Trump’s claim that Venezuela’s interim government was shutting down a “torture chamber,” likely referring to the El Helicoid prison in Caracas, a detention center for vital political prisoners in Venezuela.
