Verizon Provides Free High-Speed Internet to 183 Philadelphia Recreation Centers

Verizon is working on a project to provide high-speed internet to recreation centers in Philadelphia. This initiative aims to establish free internet access at 183 rec centers throughout the city. Funding for the project comes from a $5 million contract supported by taxpayers. Eric Reed, Verizon’s vice president for the Pennsylvania and Delaware region, stated that the effort has been ongoing for some time.

Recently, the Vare Recreation Center in Grays Ferry became the first center to offer free broadband. Verizon plans to have internet access available at 100 rec centers by 2025, with completion expected by 2026. Reed emphasized the urgency from the city to ensure residents have access to essential internet services.

Advocates are looking for new methods to maintain internet access after the Affordable Connectivity Program, which offered discounts to low-income families, ended in May. As Congress is unlikely to restart this program, Philadelphia, along with various stakeholders, is exploring alternative solutions.

Reed highlighted that urban areas like Philadelphia face different challenges compared to rural regions, particularly regarding access to devices. While rural areas struggle with infrastructure issues, urban settings face a lack of equipment, making internet connections less effective.

The rec centers will not only provide internet access but also the necessary equipment. Verizon’s initiative currently focuses on rec centers, with the potential to extend service to 261 additional sites in the future. Each facility will receive high-quality internet access of 1 gigabit, which supports educational, healthcare, and commercial activities.
