Red Bull’s Max Verstappen conceded that his on-track incident with Mercedes driver George russell during the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix ”was not right and shouldn’t have happened.” The incident impacted Verstappen’s race, leading to a 10th-place finish at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Verstappen was handed a 10-second penalty for the contact. In addition, he received three penalty points on his racing license, moving him closer to a potential race ban. The formula 1 driver’s race began to unravel after losing third position to Charles Leclerc following a safety car restart on lap 61.
Defending against Russell at Turn 1, the two drivers made contact, forcing Verstappen to use the escape road. Although Verstappen initially felt justified in his actions, Red Bull instructed him to concede fourth place to Russell. This directive preceded the controversial contact at Turn 5 on lap 64.
Following the race, Verstappen addressed the incident on Instagram.
