Max Verstappen on Brink of F1 Race Ban After Spanish Grand Prix Penalty
Updated June 11,2025
Max Verstappen’s aggressive driving in the Spanish Grand Prix has landed him perilously close to an automatic one-race ban. A 10-second time penalty, assessed for a collision with george Russell in the race’s final stages, also brought three penalty points on his FIA superlicence. This pushes Verstappen to 11 points within a 12-month span, just one shy of the threshold that triggers a suspension.
The red Bull driver now faces a tense situation at the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix and the Austrian Grand Prix. Two of his penalty points will expire on June 30,reducing the pressure ahead of the British Grand Prix. A previous incident saw Kevin Magnussen sidelined for a race after accumulating 12 points, with Oliver Bearman stepping in as his replacement for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last year.
Penalty points are assigned based on the severity and context of each incident. Verstappen’s recent penalty leaves him with little margin for error. Even a minor infraction could lead to further consequences.

Potential Pitfalls: types of Offences
Several types of incidents could push Verstappen over the penalty point limit.
Causing a collision is a frequent cause for penalty points. Verstappen’s incident with Russell was deemed a collision, resulting in three points.Sebastian Vettel received a similar penalty in 2017 for a risky maneuver against Lewis Hamilton at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Verstappen has accrued other points for collisions, including incidents with lando Norris at the Austrian Grand Prix and Oscar Piastri at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Forcing another driver off the track is another area of concern. Verstappen received two points for forcing Norris wide at the Mexico City Grand Prix last year. Nico Hulkenberg also received points for a similar incident in Austria.
Other infractions include leaving the track and gaining an advantage, and infringements under yellow or red flags. Lando Norris was penalized for speeding under double-waved yellow flags, while Bearman was penalized for overtaking under red flags in Monaco.
Drivers can also be penalized for driving unnecessarily slowly or for safety car and virtual safety car infringements. Russell received a penalty point for leaving too large a gap behind the safety car.

The focus will be on maintaining his Formula 1 championship contention while avoiding risky maneuvers.
