Encouraging Our Athletes and Promoting Korean Culture

Jang Mi-ran, Second Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, recently visited the site of the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games, where she took the opportunity to commend and uplift our athletes.

Vice Minister Jang’s visit commenced with her attendance at the opening ceremony of the local Korean House on the 21st. From there, she engaged in various meaningful interactions with athletes, leaders, and support teams throughout the duration of the Hangzhou Asian Para Games until the 24th.

At the opening ceremony of Korea House, which was held at the Sofitel Hotel in Hangzhou, Vice Minister Jang extended her encouragement towards the Korean disabled Asian Games support group and officials from the Korean Cultural Center in Shanghai. She emphasized the significance of Korea House, describing it as a space that promotes the development of disabled sports in Korea and showcases Korean culture. Additionally, she expressed her hopes for Korea House to become an effective venue for international exchange and promotion of the Republic of Korea.

During her visit, Vice Minister Jang took the opportunity to watch the preliminaries of the table tennis men’s and women’s singles group on the 22nd, where she personally provided words of support and motivation to the players. Recognizing their hard work and the challenges they faced due to the one-year postponement of the competition, she expressed her anticipation for their well-deserved success.

On the 23rd, Vice Minister Jang witnessed the men’s goalball qualifier against China. She greeted and encouraged the players, commending their impressive performance and unwavering fighting spirit. Player Kim Nam-o expressed his gratitude for Vice Minister Jang’s personal support, sharing that he still cherishes the belt she signed for him a long time ago. Furthermore, Vice Minister Jang showed her support for the men’s 54kg weightlifter, Choi Keun-jin, acknowledging the tremendous effort and dedication required in the sport.

Aside from her engagement with the athletes, Vice Minister Jang also participated in the ‘Korean Night’ event, where she had the opportunity to meet with prominent figures in the sporting world such as International Paralympic Committee Chairman Andrew Parsons and Asian Paralympic Committee Chairman Majid Rashid. The event provided a platform for fruitful discussions on disabled sports and Korean culture.

Furthermore, Vice Minister Jang’s visit extended to the athletes’ village on the 24th, where she aimed to encourage wheelchair basketball players and share a meal with the judo and rowing athletes. These interactions showcased her unwavering dedication to uplift and support the athletes throughout their journey.

Recognizing the crucial role that support groups and officials play in the operation and promotion of Korea House, Vice Minister Jang extended her encouragement and appreciation to them as well. Emphasizing the importance of awareness and sensitivity towards the disabled and their rights, she highlighted the need for consideration from coaches and game officials in all aspects of disabled sports. Park Jong-cheol, the head of the athletes’ village, affirmed their commitment to closely monitor and support the athletes, ensuring they can fully concentrate on their games and training. As a gesture of solidarity, Vice Minister Jang personally delivered snacks to the team members who were bravely facing challenges outside of the stadium.

Vice Minister Jang’s visit to the Hangzhou Asian Para Games not only served as a platform for encouragement and support but also exemplified the commitment of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in promoting Korean culture and disabled sports to an international audience.

Jang Mi-ran, Second Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, visits the site of the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games (hereinafter referred to as the Asian Para Games) and praises our athletes.

Starting with attending the opening ceremony of the local Korean House on the 21st, Vice Minister Jang has been meeting and encouraging athletes, leaders, and support teams at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games site until the 24th.

He attended the opening ceremony of Korea House held at the Sofitel Hotel in Hangzhou and encouraged the Korean disabled Asian Games support group and officials of the Korean Cultural Center in Shanghai. Vice Minister Jang said, “Korea House is a space that promotes the development of disabled sports in Korea and publicizes Korean culture,” and added, “Do your best to make Korea House an effective venue on for international exchange and promotion of the Republic of Korea.”

Vice Minister Jang watched the preliminaries of the table tennis men’s and women’s singles group on the 22nd and encouraged the players. Vice Minister Jang said, “You worked so hard. “The competition has been postponed for a year, but the situation is the same for everyone, so I hope we get good results as prepared,” he said, congratulating the team that won the preliminary test.

On the 23rd, I watched the men’s goalball qualifier against China and greeted and encouraged the players. Vice Minister Jang said, “We fought well against China in the competition held in China. “The fighting spirit and passion of the players is the best.” Player Kim Nam-o said, “I am grateful that Vice Minister Jang Mi-ran personally supported me. “I’m keeping the belt I signed a long time ago,” he said. Vice Minister Jang then watched and cheered on the men’s 54kg weightlifter, Choi Keun-jin. Vice Minister Jang said, “It’s nice to see a weightlifting competition in person after a long time. I fully understand how hard the players worked. “Thank you for your hard work,” he cheered.

Vice Minister Jang was also present at the ‘Korean Night’ event and met International Paralympic Committee Chairman Andrew Parsons and Asian Paralympic Committee Chairman Majid Rashid and chatted about disabled sports and Korean culture.

He plans to visit the athletes’ village again on the 24th to encourage wheelchair basketball players and have lunch with the judo and rowing athletes, before finishing his site visit to Hangzhou.

Vice Minister Jang also encouraged officials and leaders of support groups that help with the operation and promotion of Korea House and provide meals for athletes. Vice Minister Jang said, “In sports for the disabled, awareness of the disabled and sensitivity to human rights is very important in all aspects, including game leadership, training and operation, so it requires careful consideration by coaches and game officials.” Park Jong-cheol, head of the athletes’ village, said, “We will look more carefully at the athletes so they can focus on their games and training.” On this day, Vice Minister Jang personally delivered snacks to support the team members who are struggling outside the stadium.
