San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama returned to the lineup on Sunday, April 26, 2026, after missing Game 3 of the first-round playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers due to a concussion, but expressed dissatisfaction with how the NBA’s concussion protocol was managed following his injury.

Wembanyama delivered a strong performance in Game 4, scoring 27 points on 9-for-17 shooting, grabbing 11 rebounds, dishing out three assists, recording seven blocks and three steals while posting a plus-28 rating in 34 minutes of play. His efforts helped the Spurs secure a 114-93 victory and take a 3-1 lead in the series.

Despite the on-court success, Wembanyama made it clear he was unhappy with the handling of the concussion protocol. In a postgame interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews, he stated he felt “lots of emotions” before the game, including excitement and frustration, which he channeled into his performance.

When asked about the previous few days, Wembanyama indicated his frustration stemmed from how the NBA’s concussion protocol was carried out. He praised the Spurs’ medical staff, saying, “The Spurs have done an amazing job,” and added that his personal health had been strong since Day 1 after the injury, but emphasized that his dissatisfaction was directed at “other parties” involved in the process.

“I’m very unhappy about the way the protocol has been handled by other parties,” Wembanyama said. “But my staff has been amazing. I’ve been really healthy, starting on Day 1 after the injury. The injury, it was weird, though. It was funny.”

He declined to provide specific details about his concerns, stating he did not want the issue to become a distraction. “I won’t get into the details,” he told reporters, via The Athletic’s Jared Weiss. “I don’t want it to become a distraction. Ask me again after the end of the season.”

Wembanyama reiterated that the Spurs’ medical team had provided excellent care, noting, “All the doctors, especially on the Spurs, we have the doctors all around, they were great, took great care of me. But the way the situation was handled was very disappointing. Not on the Spurs, again.”

The injury occurred during Game 2 of the series when Wembanyama collided with Portland’s Jrue Holiday while driving to the basket with less than nine minutes remaining in the second quarter. He attempted to pass the ball as he lost his balance, did not return to the game, and was subsequently placed under the NBA’s concussion protocol.

Prior to his return, Wembanyama had missed Game 3, during which the Spurs fell to the Trail Blazers. His availability for Game 4 had been uncertain, but he participated in warm-ups before being cleared to play.

At the time of his return, Wembanyama was already recognized as the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and was considered a leading candidate for MVP honors during the 2025-26 NBA season. His absence had raised concerns about the Spurs’ playoff prospects, but his strong return performance alleviated some of those worries.

As the series shifted back to San Antonio for Game 5, the Spurs held a 3-1 advantage, with Wembanyama’s health and availability expected to remain a key factor in their pursuit of a second-round berth.
