Video-Assisted Surgery Extends Survival for early-Stage Lung Cancer Patients

Researchers analyzed data from a large, international registry encompassing over 8,000 patients who underwent surgical resection for stage I NSCLC between January 2015 and December 2022. The study, published September 11, 2024, compared outcomes for those who had VATS lobectomy (removal of a lung lobe) versus open lobectomy.
The analysis revealed that VATS lobectomy was associated with a 12% reduction in the risk of death compared to open surgery.Specifically,the five-year survival rate for patients undergoing VATS was 93.4% compared to 88.2% for those undergoing open surgery. This difference was statistically significant, indicating it wasn’t due to chance.
