Vienna Man Bravely Ice Swims in Danube River Despite Freezing Temperatures

Vienna Grapples with Deep Freeze, Danube River Operations Disrupted

Vienna is currently facing a severe cold snap, leading to hazardous conditions for residents and disruptions to shipping on the Danube River. As of today, , emergency services have been responding to a surge in incidents related to icy conditions.

From midnight to midday on Tuesday, January 14, 2026, Vienna Rescue responded to 65 incidents involving individuals who slipped on ice, resulting in injuries ranging from bruises to fractures. City services briefly implemented a partial ban on salt spreading to mitigate the risk of falls, but lifted the ban shortly after. Local officials noted that hospitals “felt it quickly,” indicating a rapid impact from the weather conditions.

The extreme cold has also impacted the Danube River, prompting urgent measures to ensure safe passage for vessels. Icebreaking operations are underway in the Vienna harbor to protect wintering cruise ships and maintain navigable routes. The MS Eisvogel, an icebreaker that has seen limited use in recent milder winters, has been recommissioned to address the current situation. With temperatures around minus six degrees Celsius, ice thickness is increasing by as much as ten centimeters per day, placing significant demands on the aging vessel.

Authorities have issued warnings to residents about the dangers of venturing onto frozen bodies of water, including the Old Danube, New Danube, and Kaiserwasser. These surfaces may appear safe, but the city cautions that the ice is often too thin to support weight and is not officially approved for use.

The current conditions echo the expertise of Wim Hof, also known as “The Iceman,” an extreme athlete known for his ability to withstand low temperatures. Hof attributes his feats to breathing techniques and cold exposure, claiming these practices can reduce inflammation and contribute to better health. However, authorities strongly advise against attempting similar feats without professional supervision, emphasizing that cold water exposure should only be undertaken in controlled environments.

The situation in Vienna is part of a broader pattern of severe winter weather across Europe. Recent reports indicate that Austria is facing overnight disruption due to black ice refreezing roads and pavements. Elsewhere, Spain is dealing with flooding from Storm Leonardo, and Portugal is on edge as the storm triggers further flooding and power outages.
