A famous female model in Vietnam is facing jail time after posting a video of herself performing stunts on a motorbike on social media.

According to local media such as VN Express on the 16th (local time), prosecutors in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam charged model Tran Thi Ngoc Trinh (35) on charges of violating public order. Trinh was subject to a public safety investigation in October last year on charges of driving a motorbike in an unsafe manner on a road near Ho Chi Minh City. He has also been charged with forging a motorbike licence.

Chin first became a model in 2005 and gained popularity by taking several underwear and swimwear photos. In 2011, she participated and won the ‘Miss Vietnam International’ contest, and also appeared in a movie in 2016. Jin’s TikTok and Facebook followers are reported to be 6.8 million and 3 million, respectively.

In videos posted on TikTok and Facebook, Chin lies down on the motorcycle while riding or stands up by just stepping on the footrest. He even showed the ‘Titanic pose’ with both arms removed from the steering wheel. He appears to be wearing no protective gear other than a helmet. Videos containing scenes like this became a hot topic, garnering millions of likes.

The Ho Chi Minh Prosecutor’s Office decided to indict him not only for his driving stunts, but also because he continued to post videos of this scene on social media, which had a negative impact on teenagers. The prosecution said, “The video posted by Jin had a negative impact on public safety and order, especially young people.” Currently, three Trinh motorcycles, drone cameras, fake vehicle documents, and electronic devices have been confiscated. Local media said that if he is found guilty at trial, he is expected to be sentenced to 2 to 7 years in prison.

However, some have expressed the view that it seems too harsh to indict and imprison people for stunt driving alone. In a local article, there are comments such as “He is only a young man who acted impulsively, but the expected sentence is too heavy” and “Rather than a prison sentence, it seems more necessary to give him room to reform so that he does not does that. commit such acts again”. However, views also argued for retention, such as “There’s no telling what kind of accident could happen, so the punishment should be strong” and “It’s an act similar to drunk driving.”
