Arsenal’s pursuit of star striker Viktor Gyokeres has hit a notable snag, with the player facing disciplinary action from his current club, Sporting CP, after failing to report for pre-season training. The situation, confirmed by Sporting president Frederico Varandas, has cast a shadow over the highly anticipated transfer, making a swift resolution increasingly complex.
The Unreported Absence and its Ramifications
Viktor Gyokeres, who has been a revelation for Sporting since his arrival, has not yet provided a public clarification for his absence from pre-season training. This unexplained no-show has prompted his club to consider disciplinary measures. Sporting president Frederico Varandas, speaking to portuguese news agency Lusa, emphasized that “no one is above the interests of the club.”
Varandas indicated that the club remains resolute in thier valuation of the striker, stating, ”If they don’t want to pay Viktor’s fair market value, we’ll be very agreeable with that for the next three years.” He also addressed those attempting to leverage the situation, asserting, “If the geniuses who are devising this strategy think that this puts pressure on me to make it easier for him to leave, not only are they wholly wrong, but they are also making it more complicated for the player to leave.”
The club president suggested potential resolutions, including “a hefty fine and an apology to the group,” implying that the door remains open for reconciliation, albeit on Sporting’s terms.
Arsenal’s Persistent Pursuit and the Financial Landscape
Despite the developing disciplinary issues, Arsenal reportedly remains hopeful of securing Gyokeres’ signature. BBC Sport has revealed that Arsenal’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, recently held face-to-face discussions with the Swedish international in Portugal.
Sources indicate that negotiations are ongoing, with Arsenal’s most recent offer for the prolific striker reportedly reaching approximately 70 million euros (£60 million),inclusive of add-ons. This figure falls short of Gyokeres’ full release clause, which stands at 100 million euros (£85 million).Last month, Varandas clarified that while there was no “gentleman’s agreement” for a transfer at the 70 million euro mark, Sporting would not insist on the full release clause.
Gyokeres’ Extraordinary Form and Sporting’s Stance
Gyokeres’ absence comes after an extraordinary season where he netted an impressive 54 goals in 52 appearances for Sporting. His overall record in Portugal is equally remarkable, with 97 goals in 102 matches across his two seasons, playing a pivotal role in the club’s two league title victories.
Sporting’s firm stance,as articulated by Varandas, suggests they are prepared to hold onto their star asset if their valuation is not met. This approach underscores the club’s commitment to protecting its interests and maintaining control over player transfers, even in the face of significant interest from a Premier League giant like Arsenal. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether this standoff can be resolved or if Gyokeres’ future at Sporting, and his potential move to Arsenal, will face further complications.
