Vipps Brings NFC Payments to iPhone
vipps Becomes First app to Offer NFC Payments Directly on iPhone
Norwegian payment platform Vipps has made history by becoming the first app to offer direct NFC payments on iPhone, bypassing Apple Wallet. This groundbreaking move follows the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which forced Apple to open up its NFC reader to third-party developers earlier this year with iOS 17.4.

The latest Vipps update allows iPhone users to make contactless payments in stores using their cards directly within the app, eliminating the need to switch to Apple Wallet.Users can even choose to replace Apple Wallet entirely, making Vipps their default payment method when double-clicking the side button.
Currently, Vipps supports Bankaxept cards, Norway’s national payment system. However, the platform plans to add support for Visa and Mastercard in the coming months, enabling global contactless payments through Vipps.
“We have fought for years to be able to compete on equal footing with Apple, and it feels almost surreal to finally be able to launch our very own solution,” said Rune Garborg, CEO of Vipps MobilePay. “This will now be a very exciting battle between the world’s biggest brand and Vipps.”
This progress follows Apple’s declaration in August that it would expand the availability of its NFC API to more countries, including the United states. With iOS 18.1, developers gained access to the NFC & SE Platform API, allowing them to create wallet apps for payments, digital keys, IDs, and tickets. Apple emphasizes that the API leverages the iPhone’s Secure Enclave to ensure data privacy.
The Vipps launch marks a notable step in the evolution of mobile payments, offering iPhone users a new level of choice and convenience. As more developers embrace Apple’s NFC API, we can expect to see a wider range of innovative payment solutions emerge in the near future.
