Volleyball Legend Han Song-i Announces Retirement After 20 Seasons

Han Song-i (40), middle blocker for Jeonggwanjang women’s professional volleyball team, is leaving his beloved court after completing 20 seasons of volleyball.

On the 26th, the Jeonggwanjang volleyball team announced, “‘Captain Song’ Han Song-i is retiring from active duty.”

Han Song-i, who joined Korea Expressway Corporation as the first overall pick in the 2002 rookie draft before graduating from Hanil Jeonsan Girls’ High School, received the Super League Rookie of the Year Award in the 2002-2003 season.

In the 2007-2008 season, when he played as a wing attacker, he became the top scorer (692 points). While foreign players sweep the title of top scorer, the title of top scorer among domestic players is the unrivaled title of Han Song-i.

After teaming up with Jeong Kwan-Jang, he transformed into a middle blocker and enjoyed his second peak by showing his excellent volleyball intelligence, including being selected as one of the top 7 for two consecutive seasons in the 2019-2020 seasons and 2020-2021. After wearing the Taegeuk symbol several times, he contributed to the ‘legend of the final four’ at the London 2012 Olympic Games together with his older sister Han Yu-mi (42).

Han Song-i, who played for the road construction company, started as a professional in 2005 and worked at Heungkuk Life Insurance (2008-2011) and GS Caltex (2011-2017) before settling at predecessor KGC Ginseng Corporation Cheong Kwan -jang, in 2017 and playing for a total of 20 seasons until last season I filled it and walked around the court.

Han Song-i, who is Han Yu-mi’s younger sister, who currently works as a commentator for a broadcasting company and is also famous as a ‘volleyball player sister’, said, “It was a time like a dream “I was happy with the immense love I received from CheongKwanJang over the past seven years,” he said “Thanks to my loving family and the fans who always supported me, I was able to enjoy my career as a player . “I will greet my fans again with a good image,” he said of his retirement.

Jeonggwanjang plans to hold a retirement ceremony for Han Songi during the home opener of the upcoming 2024-2025 season.
