“We ‍often⁢ have a negative perception of⁢ these facilities, thinking of them as places where people simply go ‍to die. I had some ‍apprehension before starting,” Paradis said. “But when I arrived, I found life and activity. It wasn’t as sad as I ⁤had imagined.”

Paradis seamlessly integrates‍ himself ⁤into the daily life ⁤of⁣ the residence. Charles,⁣ a resident who uses a wheelchair, noted, “With Gaël, we often go out for an hour ⁣or half an hour. We tour ⁣the residence. He suggests it, he is very caring, and he looks after everyone. We call him, and he⁤ is there.”

For⁢ nearly eight months, the former psychology student has dedicated his time to the specialized facility, home to approximately 80 residents,⁣ many of whom are dependent or⁢ living with Alzheimer’s disease. ⁢Paradis’s civic service ⁤focuses on bringing‍ joy ‍and engagement to the community.

Philippe Vigneras, ‍the residence’s facilitator, organizes a ⁢range of activities for the residents, including outdoor excursions, cultural⁣ events, memory exercises, and sports workshops. ⁣He emphasizes the importance of the volunteers’ contributions. “We guide‍ them, and they ⁤bring fresh energy and ideas,” Vigneras said. “My main goal is⁤ for them to connect ‍with⁢ all the residents. If they don’t feel comfortable with a particular resident due to their level of dependency, I respect that.”

Aurore Brochet, human resources assistant at⁢ the Amarraggi residence, highlights the unique contributions of⁣ each ⁤volunteer. “At first, we‍ weren’t sure how the civic service would fit⁣ into our establishment. Overcoming Challenges and Building Connections

Paradis admitted to initial anxieties at the beginning of his ⁤service. “In the first few days, ⁢I was a little stressed, wondering how I⁢ would interact with people who might not react when spoken to,” he recalled. “But there are ways⁤ to establish a connection. Music, for example, can be a key. Each resident has something that brings ‍them joy and a desire to live.”

Paradis, who has an interest in the arts and current events, has introduced innovative activities, ⁣including a press review where residents participate and a series of discussions called “And if we were talking about…”. “We discuss a theme, and I ⁤share anecdotes from the internet or my own knowledge,⁤ which leads to great exchanges,” he said.

Maryvonne Perchot, the director of ⁣the residence, praised Paradis’s‍ initiatives. “These activities help residents maintain ‍a sense of ⁢purpose, build social connections, and feel useful by participating in workshops tailored to⁢ them,” she said.
