The use of corporate private jets by top executives has become a focal point of scrutiny regarding corporate governance and environmental accountability, as evidenced by historical and ongoing controversies involving major global firms.

Volkswagen executives were previously required to reimburse the company millions of euros for the use of private aircraft for personal travel. According to reports from the Bild am Sonntag newspaper in December 2016, members of the executive board had utilized the company’s fleet for personal trips, including family holidays.

Volkswagen Executive Reimbursements

For several years, Volkswagen’s executive board members were offered flights on private jets at rates equal to or lower than commercial travel costs. By 2014, the extent of this personal use prompted Ferdinand Piech, then chairman of the supervisory board, to demand that executives pay back the costs.

Volkswagen Executive Reimbursements

Those presented with bills for reimbursement included former chief executive Martin Winterkorn, as well as Hans-Dieter Poetsch, then chairman of the supervisory board, and Rupert Stadler, the chief executive of Audi, a Volkswagen subsidiary. In some instances, the individual bills exceeded one million euros.

The crackdown on executive perks at Volkswagen extended beyond aviation. The company also implemented stricter limits on the use of chauffeured company cars for private purposes and removed subsidized rents on executive homes.

Broader Corporate Trends in Private Aviation

The tension between corporate cost-cutting and executive luxury is a wider trend among large American companies. A Wall Street Journal analysis indicated that more than half of the 500 largest companies in the United States now pay for their chief executives to fly private.

Spending on private air travel has increased by nearly 77% since 2020. Examples of high-profile corporate spending include:

  • Meta paid $1.5 million in the previous year to charter flights for CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon received nearly $300,000 in personal jet travel in addition to $36 million in pay.
  • Starbucks reportedly covers the private plane commute for its CEO from California to Seattle.

Companies often justify these expenditures as necessary for the safety of their executives. However, critics point to the optics of such spending when companies are simultaneously reducing staff, closing locations, or cutting budgets.

Environmental and Political Implications

The environmental impact of private aviation is increasingly under scrutiny. Private jets are among the most polluting forms of travel, emitting up to 10 times more pollution per passenger than commercial flights. Research from Linnaeus University in Sweden found that carbon pollution from private jets rose 46% over a five-year period.

This environmental cost has led to accusations of hypocrisy for both corporate leaders and political figures. Elon Musk’s jets reportedly released 11 million pounds of carbon dioxide in 2024, despite Tesla’s image as a clean-energy company.

In the political sphere, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders faced backlash on April 22, 2025, during Earth Day. The pair were photographed using a Bombardier Challenger luxury private jet during a Fighting Oligarchy tour across Western states, including cities such as Sacramento, Bakersfield, Boise, and Salt Lake City.

The estimated cost for roughly five hours of flight time was over $77,000. Further financial records indicated that Senator Sanders’ campaign arm spent over $221,000 on private jet travel in the first quarter of 2025.
