The purpose of this meeting was to reflect on the following theme: “The role of political parties in the development of the country and in achieving the vision of Burundi, an emerging country in 2040 and a developed country in 2060.”
Burundi, Ingoma Y’Uburundi, is an ancient thousand year old state [1] in Africa. Throughout the ages, the families played a central role in the political life of the country, replacing political parties today. Within these families the members democratically elected their Bataka, or leaders. These Bataka, in turn, were responsible for choosing the Mwami, the sovereign of Ingoma y’Uburundi. By the decree of December 25, 1959, in the midst of colonization, the families were replaced, until today, by political parties.
