First Look: duncan Jones’ ‘Rogue Trooper’ Animated Film

director Duncan Jones, known for Warcraft, has offered a sneak peek at his upcoming project, Rogue Trooper. The film, based on the 2000 AD comics character, utilizes Unreal Engine 5 for animation, a tool also used in popular 2025 games like Split Fiction and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The new Rogue Trooper film promises a fresh take on the classic character.
Producer Stuart fenegan highlighted the film’s visual fidelity. The team used on-set actor performances to drive the animated characters. Fenegan said in a news release that this level of detail was a priority from the start.
Aneurin Barnard will star as the titular Genetic Infantryman in Rogue Trooper. Hayley Atwell, Sean Bean, and Asa Butterfield will provide voices for other characters.
The Rogue Trooper project has been in advancement for several years,with initial confirmation dating back to 2018,the same year Jones released Mute. Jones gained prominence among gamers for directing 2016’s Warcraft,adapted from the Blizzard series.
The film centers on the Genetic Infantryman, created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons. He is the sole survivor of an invasion force. Driven to find the traitor responsible for the betrayal, the super soldier is accompanied by the personalities of three fallen squad mates, stored within his equipment.
What’s next
while a release date and trailer for Rogue Trooper are still pending, Jones hinted at further announcements at San Diego Comic-Con next month. “AHHHHHHHHHHHH! WE’RE ALMOST FINISHED! SEE YOU AT SDCC!!” Jones exclaimed in the release.
