Warning: Unlicensed Beauty Salon Infects Three Women with HIV through ‘Vampire Procedure’

what good news
Three women who received PRP (autologous platelet-rich plasma) injections, the so-called “vampire procedure”, at an unlicensed beauty salon in the United States have been infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), it has been revealed.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) disclosed the results of an epidemiological investigation conducted jointly with the New Mexico State Health Department in a report on the incidence and mortality of the disease published on the 25th (now local).

According to the report, in New Mexico, a woman in her 40s was infected with HIV in 2018 even though there were no suspicious factors such as drug abuse, sexual contact or blood transfusion.

Health authorities, who launched the investigation, believed that the victim may have been infected with HIV while receiving PRP treatment at a local unlicensed beauty salon and conducted a follow-up investigation of users.

As a result, a total of 5 cases of HIV infection were confirmed. Except for 2 people who were previously HIV positive, the remaining 3 people reportedly contracted HIV while receiving PRP treatment at the company in question.

The CDC explained: “This is the result of reusing disposable equipment that should only be used once and then discarded.”

PRP is a procedure that helps skin regenerate by extracting the patient’s blood, separating the platelet-rich plasma using a centrifuge, and then injecting it into the face with a fine needle. It is said that the infection may have spread as the needles were recycled.

The CDC said, “Unsterilized syringes are known to be a route of HIV infection, but this is the first reported case of HIV transmission through contaminated blood during cosmetic injection services.”

The British Guardian newspaper reported on the 28th that the beauty salon in question was closed in the fall of 2018, shortly after the health authorities began investigations, and the owner was indicted for practicing medicine without a license.
