A 13-year-old boy in Warrington, Cheshire, is shaving his head to raise funds for St Rocco’s Hospice, which is providing palliative care to his 43-year-old mother, Sarah, after a stage four bowel cancer diagnosis. BBC reported that Henry’s fundraiser has already collected more than £1,000 ahead of the scheduled head shave on 8 October.
St Rocco's Hospice Care in Warrington
Sarah was initially diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer in March 2025 at the age of 43, according to BBC. She underwent an initial operation to fit a stoma and completed chemotherapy, but those treatments failed to stop the disease. The cancer subsequently spread to surrounding organs, prompting a second operation at the Christie Hospital in Manchester alongside hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, a heated regional chemotherapy treatment.
Scans conducted in March revealed inoperable nodes, shifting her medical plan from curative to life-prolonging palliative treatment. Around four months prior to the fundraising effort, Sarah began receiving support from St Rocco’s Hospice in Warrington. The facility has provided complementary therapies for both Sarah and her mother, who has assisted with caregiving over the past 18 months.

Henry Shaves Head to Support Hospice Care
Henry decided to raise money for the hospice to give back for the care provided to his mother and future patients. She has had multiple operations which were unsuccessful and she is now on palliative treatment to prolong her life,
Henry said, as cited by BBC. In the last few months St Rocco’s has helped my mum to come to turns with this and will be more help in the future.
The head-shave idea originated after medical staff informed Sarah that chemotherapy would likely cause hair loss. He said he would shave his head when I lost my hair so I wasn’t the only one who was bald in the family,
Sarah said, as reported by BBC. Although Sarah has experienced some hair loss that remains unnoticeable, Henry chose to proceed with the event.
Warrington Community Donates over £1,000 for Young Carer
Alongside his fundraising, Henry acts as a young carer for his mother, assisting around the house when her symptoms flare. Sarah, a mother of three who also has a 19-year-old daughter and a 21-year-old son, described Henry as a larger-than-life character who lightens the daily mood.
BBC reported that family, friends, and the wider Warrington community have provided extensive backing, with donations surpassing £1,000 ahead of the 8 October event. He’s a great help at home – he is classed as a young carer because he does help me at times when I’m not feeling great,
Sarah said.
They are always lovely welcoming people and they have been an amazing resource really for a lot of people in Warrington and the surrounding area.
Sarah
