The second set saw Sakkari, the 2023 tournament runner-up, mount a comeback. The 29-year-old Greek player broke Raducanu’s serve in the sixth game and then saved two break points to establish a 5-2 lead, seemingly on course to force a decider. However, Raducanu demonstrated remarkable resilience, winning five consecutive games to take the second set 7-5. This impressive turnaround included converting two of her five break points in the latter stages of the set.
Raducanu Reflects on ”Brutal” Conditions
Despite her victory, Raducanu admitted to feeling the effects of the intense heat. She received attention from a physio during the second set and later described feeling “a bit wobbly” due to the conditions. “It was brutal today,” Raducanu commented. “It was a long match, the first set was over an hour.You just have to enjoy suffering and leave it all out there on the court.”
She also acknowledged her opponent’s strong performance, stating, “Maria played an incredible match and the conditions really suit her with the liveliness of her game.” Looking ahead, Raducanu emphasized the need for recovery and planning for her doubles commitments. “I need to prepare [for the doubles] and get out of the heat. I felt a bit wobbly at the back end of the second set.”
Skupski and Smith Power into Men’s Doubles Semi-Finals
In men’s doubles action, Britain’s Neal Skupski and his Australian partner John-Patrick Smith delivered a strong performance to reach the semi-finals. The British-Australian duo staged a comeback after dropping the first set against the fourth seeds, Michael Venus and Yuki Bhambri. Skupski and Smith ultimately triumphed with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory in a closely fought match.
