Yorkshire musician James​ Welsh released his debut album, ‘Filaments,’ today, January 23,⁢ 2026, via Phantasy, the record label owned by DJ Erol Alkan. The release is accompanied by an‌ emotional short film directed by ​BAFTA-winning​ director Kieran Evans.

Background on ‘Filaments’

‘Filaments’ represents Welsh’s first record released under his own name, though he ⁢was previously signed‌ too Phantasy under ‌the ​alias Kamera.According⁣ to Welsh,the album is “a collection born from an ⁤intersection of pain and perseverance.” ‍The project stems from ⁢the tragic loss of ⁤his son, Rory, ‍to leukaemia in 2016 at the age of one.

Creative Process ‌and Influences

Welsh crafted the album’s ⁣tracks in isolation within his‍ studio. He describes ‘Filaments’‍ as an attempt to “reckon with this incomparable tragedy,” drawing on influences from techno, experimental music, and post-rock. The ‌album gathers tracks​ created both during Rory’s illness​ and in​ the ‌years ⁤following his death, representing a period of meaningful personal upheaval and​ rebuilding.

Short film Details

The accompanying short film was ⁢directed by kieran Evans, known for his 2012 film Kelly + Victor and his work with bands like Manic Street Preachers.
