Background on ‘Filaments’
‘Filaments’ represents Welsh’s first record released under his own name, though he was previously signed too Phantasy under the alias Kamera.According to Welsh, the album is “a collection born from an intersection of pain and perseverance.” The project stems from the tragic loss of his son, Rory, to leukaemia in 2016 at the age of one.
Creative Process and Influences
Welsh crafted the album’s tracks in isolation within his studio. He describes ‘Filaments’ as an attempt to “reckon with this incomparable tragedy,” drawing on influences from techno, experimental music, and post-rock. The album gathers tracks created both during Rory’s illness and in the years following his death, representing a period of meaningful personal upheaval and rebuilding.
