The Japanese Olympic team defeated its Qatari counterpart, preventing it from moving forward with the Asian Under-23 Football Championship, currently being held in Qatar.

The “Samurai” team qualified for the semi-finals of the continental competition, which qualifies for the men’s football competitions at the next Olympic Games in Paris this summer, after a 4-2 victory over the “Annabi” team after extra time in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Japan took the lead with an early goal in the second minute, scored by Fuki Yamada, before Ahmed Hisham Al-Rawi equalized for the Qatari team in the 24th minute.

The Qatar national team was forced to play with 10 players after its player Youssef Abdel Rahman was sent off in the 41st minute.

But despite the numerical deficiency, Al-Annabi added the second goal through Jassim Jaber in the 49th minute.

The Japanese national team quickly equalized through Seiji Kimura in the 67th minute, ending regular time in a 2-2 tie, and the two teams resorted to playing half an hour in extra time, divided equally into two halves.

During extra time, the Japanese team decided things in their favor, as Mao Hosoya added the third goal in the 101st minute, while Kotaro Uchino ensured the fourth goal in the 122nd minute.

The Japanese national team set a date in the semi-finals of the tournament next Monday with the winner of the Iraq-Vietnam national team match, which will be held on Friday in the quarter-finals.

It is noteworthy that the top three teams will participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics, while the fourth-placed team in the competition will play with the Guinea national team, which achieved the same place in the U-23 African Cup of Nations, which was held in Morocco last year.
