What the agreement between the ruling party and the DC left behind for the municipal authorities

After a marathon last negotiation that lasted more than 24 hours, there is an agreement between the different blocks of the ruling party and the DC to share a list in the municipal elections.

After 24 hours of uninterrupted negotiations, the officialdom – represented by the Frente Amplio, the Communist Party and Democratic Socialism – together with the Christian Democracy they managed to finalize the Contigo Chile Mejor pact to face the municipal elections next October.

In this way, Contigo Chile Mejor brought together Social Convergence, Democratic Revolution, Comunes, Socialist Party, Radical Party, Christian Democracy, Party for Democracy, Communist Party, Social Green Regionalist Front, Liberal Party and Humanist Action.

The exception to this new alliance is that it does not consider the elections of councilors, where the DC joined on a list with Democratic Socialism, and of regional governors.

Municipal elections

The “moderate” triumph of the DC and the socialist defeat

This new electoral pact It also includes the holding of primaries in 86 communes of the countryrespecting the 60-40 proposal of the president of the DC, Alberto Undurraga.

That is, of the 20 mayoralties that currently belong to the phalanx and that cannot be re-elected, 40% will be for a DC candidate, while 60% will be contested in primaries.

“In the life of public service sometimes these things happen, but it is in function of a greater good. In that sense I think that all parties are happy with the result, but naturally we had to give in and that means some internal pain,” said Undurraga.

Thus, there will be official primaries in communes such as Valparaíso -leaving aside supporting Jorge Sharp-, La Granja, Peñalolén, La Florida and Providencia, in the latter without the presence of Josefa Errázuriz (IND-PPD).

A diametrically opposite view had are a couple from PS, Paulina Vodanovic, who revealed his party’s disagreement with the municipal agreement reached.

“We have had to give in, in our case, with a lot of pain in some communes, because they were historical, socialist communes, where we had great fellow candidates.. And I want to say that it has been very difficult,” said the senator.

This, since the socialists They had to lower, for example, the emblematic pre-candidacy of Ismael Calderón in the commune of Santiago and join the re-election campaign of Irací Hassler.

Santiago

Santiago and Recoleta with only PC candidate

While, The one that draws happy accounts is the Communist Party, since it achieved that in Santiago and Recoleta, two emblematic municipalities of the PC, there are no primaries and the candidate of the community is supported.

In this way, Irací Hassler will be the only candidate in the sector to keep the mayor of Santiago in the hands of the PC, while In Recoleta, the one chosen to seek to replace Daniel Jadue is the current councilor Fares Jadue.

This mechanism will be replicated in Pudahuel, Maipú and Viña del Mar, where the ruling party and the DC will support the re-elections of Ítalo Bravo (IND-PC), Tomás Vodanovic (RD) and Macarena Ripamonti (RD), respectively.
