What to do when Chromebook USB port etc stops responding | HelenTech

In this article, we will present what to do when you are using a Chromebook and suddenly the USB port (USB-C or USB-A) becomes unusable or you cannot charge it.

If you read the official support and other user articles in advance and acquire information, you can respond when you are in trouble, but if you notice a problem suddenly, for example, you will be in a hurry.

This time, while also serving as a memorandum, I will present a coping method for users who encounter a similar situation.

for me

In my case, I was charging my Chromebook while doing some work, and suddenly a warning “You are connected to a low-power charger” appeared in the notification area. I was.

Since it was fully charged and it was time to go out, I unplugged the power and took the Chromebook out. When I tried to delete the notification, it didn’t respond and stayed in the notification area even after logging out and restarting.

At this time, when I connected the charger to the left USB-C port, it did not charge and the charging lamp did not light up. However, when I connected it to the USB-C port on the right side, it started charging without problems, and the warning in the notification area disappeared, so I thought it was a relief, but it’s not .

This time, when I switched the charging cable from the right side to the left side USB-C port, it still didn’t charge, and when I tried to insert the USB-C receiver (Jabra Link) from my Jabra Evolve2 Buds, there was no reaction.

In summary, it looks like this.

  1. A sudden “low power ~” warning appears during charging
  2. The warning does not go away even after a reboot
  3. The warning goes away when you plug it into the port opposite to the one used for charging.
  4. If you plug it back into the original port, it won’t charge, and the port itself won’t respond.
  5. It can’t be helped, so Powerwash (on business trip)
  6. Unsolved! ?

By the way, I will introduce how to solve this phenomenon through the following method.

do a hard reset

“EC reset (hard reset)” is a function that only resets the hardware settings, unlike the power wash that returns the Chromebook to its initial state. This reset resets the Chromebook’s hardware (eg keyboard, touchpad, USB ports, etc.).

Hard reset is easy, just follow the steps below to hard reset your Chromebook.

  1. Turn off your Chromebook
  2. Hold down the refresh button and press the power button
  3. Release the refresh button when the Chromebook starts up

For tablet-type Chromebooks,[音量大ボタン]a[電源ボタン]Press and hold for at least 10 seconds at the same time and then release to perform a hard reset.

The good thing about this method is that it only initializes the keyboard and trackpad settings, etc., and doesn’t wipe the account like Power Wash, so there’s no need to perform the initial setup again. However, please note that the files in the download may be deleted.

So, if you have problems with the keyboard, USB, or charging on the go, try a “hard reset” after confirming that there are no problems even if you review the settings, etc. , and if that doesn’t work, power wash I think flow is best.

However, on the official page of Googlemsgstr “Try only if other methods have not resolved the issue.”It is

“Other methods” refers to methods other than hard reset and Powerwash (resetting the Chromebook to its initial state), that is, reviewing the settings described in the help and checking for problems and compatibility with peripheral devices. If these are fine and you suspect that your Chromebook is the cause, try a hard reset.

summary

So, when the USB-C or A port suddenly stops responding or you can’t charge it, try a hard reset before doing the final boot (Powerwash). I think it’s good to remember in a corner.

Booting (Powerwashing) may not solve the problem for some reason as the author, and Powerwashing will require setting up the Chromebook eventually, so it will take time and effort.

We recommend that you review the settings, hard reset, and boot, and if that doesn’t work, suspect a failure and contact the manufacturer to confirm.
