WhatsApp Rolls Out Ads to Status Tab After Long Delay
After a seven-year wait, Meta has begun displaying advertisements within WhatsApp’s Status tab. The company assures users that the introduction of ads, channel subscriptions, and promoted channels will not disrupt personal chats. These changes are confined to the Updates tab.
Meta stated in a blog post that the Updates tab is the appropriate place for these new features, as the company has been planning a business model that doesn’t interfere with personal conversations for years.
According to Meta, WhatsApp users can now interact with businesses advertising products or services via the Status tab. Ad targeting will utilize user data, including device language, location, followed channels, and ad interactions. If a user has linked WhatsApp to Meta’s Accounts Center, ad preferences and information from other Meta accounts will also be used.
Meta emphasized that user phone numbers will not be sold or shared with marketers. End-to-end encryption will continue to protect chats, calls, and status updates from being used for ad targeting. The Status tab is a valuable space, with Meta reporting over 1.5 billion daily users.
The move to introduce ads on WhatsApp comes as no surprise, given that advertising remains Meta’s primary revenue source. The company is likely seeking additional revenue streams to support other ventures.
What’s next
It remains to be seen how users will react to the introduction of ads in the status tab and whether it will substantially impact WhatsApp’s user experience and Meta’s revenue streams.
