WhatsApp, the globally popular messaging app used by billions for personal and professional communication, is rolling out new features designed to enhance its group call experience. Thes updates, announced on August 18, 2025, bring WhatsApp closer in functionality to established video conferencing tools like Zoom and Google Meet.
The move is a natural progression for WhatsApp, which has become a central hub for many businesses, communities, and study groups. As usage expands beyond simple messaging, the demand for more robust calling features increases.
Schedule Calls with Ease
Perhaps the most notable addition is the ability to schedule calls directly within the app. Previously, coordinating a WhatsApp call required back-and-forth messaging to find a mutually convenient time. Now, users can initiate scheduling from the “Calls” tab by tapping the “+” button and selecting “Schedule Call.”
The scheduling interface allows you to name the call, add a descriptive topic, and specify a start and end time. A toggle allows you to omit the end time if the duration is flexible. You can also choose between a standard voice call or a video call.

Once the call is scheduled, an invite is generated and can be sent to individuals or groups. Recipients simply click “Join Call” to participate. The event details, including a calendar integration option and a shareable link, are accessible via a calendar icon.
Enhanced Group Call Dynamics
WhatsApp is also improving the experience *during* group calls. Two new features aim to make conversations more fluid and engaging.participants can now use in-call reactions - a quick way to express themselves without interrupting the speaker. Additionally, a “raise your hand” function allows individuals to signal their desire to speak, promoting a more organized discussion.

WhatsApp emphasizes that all calls, including scheduled calls, are protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring privacy and security for all participants. According to WhatsApp’s official blog, this commitment to security remains a core principle as the app evolves.
