Based on ‘Wheel Navigil’, the nation’s first guide service for wheelchair users, Jeju Island is starting to create a Jeju tourism environment for all of us, including the visually and hearing impaired.

On the afternoon of the 3rd, Jeju Island and the Ministry of Public Administration and Security drew attention by holding a navigation app demonstration at Halla Ecological Forest, a ‘project to improve outdoor navigation services for the transportation disadvantaged’ that combines high-precision location-based mobility technology.

This project was selected as one of the five key collaboration tasks for 2022 by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, and aims to realize a people-centered government without partitions and solve community problems. Jeju Island was the only local government to be selected for the collaboration task, and a total of 400 million won (300 million from the government and 100 million from the local government) was invested in the project.

Officials from the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, Kakao Co., Ltd., the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Korea-Seoul Blind Association, Jeju Sign Language Interpretation Center, and Jeju Disabled Welfare Center attended the demonstration.

On this day, the demonstration centered on the service for the visually impaired started at the information center and passed through Jeju’s special plant, Magnolia Chongrim, and experienced voice guidance on the terminal, along with a warning sound when departing from the route, a vibration notification function, and crossroad direction guidance.

Until now, when visually impaired people use the app, it has been difficult to provide smooth guidance due to the inaccurate location. In addition, the Halla Ecological Forest Aquatic Botanical Garden provided a sign language video service for the hearing impaired.

After the demonstration, starting with a report on the ‘Promotion of Project for Advancement of Outdoor Directions Service for the Transportation Vulnerable’, difficulties in travel due to visual impairment and improvement plans were discussed.

Governor Oh Yeong-hoon said, “Outdoor guidance service for the transportation vulnerable is giving new hope to the transportation-impaired, who account for nearly 30% of the total population of Jeju.” We will work with various organizations,” he said.

Representative Kim Ye-ji said, “As a person who grasped the development process from the start of the business, it is very meaningful to experience that the route guidance service has developed a lot.” I hope the influence will expand.”

Meanwhile, Jeju Island plans to establish a standardized management system for barrier-free travel, share related technologies domestically and internationally, and actively support organizations that wish to benchmark.

Since June of last year, it has been operating a route guidance service for wheelchair users in 30 tourist spots in the province, including Jeju Stone Park, and 424 users have used the ‘Wheel Navigil’.
